Keeping Your Browser Cache Clear

Like most elements of technology, the cache of your web browser requires your management.  This area needs to be cleaned frequently for many reasons – with one of the most important being disk space.  A clear cache equals more disk space, which your PC needs in order to keep performing like a champ.
Even when you have not physically clicked on a website to execute the downloading of a file, your browser is still transferring those images and files in order to give you its best performance.  This enables your computer to display quality web pages, allowing you to access pages much faster during your next visit.

Clearing out the cache of your browser will preserve space, but also protect your privacy.  All of those images and files from web pages serve as traceable records for your internet searching history.  You may ask, “What do I have to hide?”  Well, hopefully nothing.  The problem is that most of your activity can be traced right from your cache, even if you are not online.  Just as you would go through extreme measures to prevent spam from flooding your inbox, the same measures need to be taken in order to secure the privacy of your surfing habits.

Managing Your Internet Explorer Cache
All web browsers store scripting files, such as HTML and images of the websites you visited, into a browser cache.  Since Internet Explorer is one of the most widely used browsers, we will give you a few tips on how to clear the browser from there:

Delete Individual Files

  • Select “Tools”
  • Next, choose “Internet Options”
  • Click the “Settings” button from within the “General” menu
  • Now choose “Select View Files”
  • This will display a folder window that shows what Internet Explorer saved during your web surfing experience.  You can now individually delete each file at your leisure.
Delete the Entire Cache
  • Click “Tools”
  • Next, select “Internet Options”
  • Click on the “General” tab
  • In this menu, check the box beside “Delete all offline content”
  • Click “OK” twice to save the changes and close out the menu.

After completing these steps, you should have more space on your hard drive, and the cache of your web browser will be visibly clear.  This may be sufficient for the most part, but many times, it is not optimal.  Manually clearing your cache may not delete this data in its entirety.  Fragments of those files are capable of building up in your computer’s registry and causing problems over time.  Experienced web intruders may also be able to peek in on the sensitive data you thought had been long deleted.
